Amore Basenjis

Happy Dogs.                                                              Happy Families.

All Amore Puppies will leave here:

Puppy Culture Raised:  Puppies raised the Puppy Culture way have improved cardio vascular performance (stronger heart rates), stronger heart beats, a stronger adrenal system that works better and faster when they need it, and are more tolerant of stress with a greater resistance to disease.  They also have increased learning ability, with better retention, and appear more stable, less fearful, and better able to cope with and recover from frightening or stressful situations/things.   Scientific Studies have shown that Enrichment Effects (like Puppy Culture) actually cause animals to grow up to 5% more brain (and within that, are anywhere from 25-200 neuro-connections!). Studies have shown that the area of the brain where these new brain cells form is actually the area related to learning, memory, and emotional response!

AKC Registered: Individually AKC registered to the name the buyer chooses. We do have Litter Themes (such as Stars, Band, Hearts, etc) that we require all new buyers to go with. The registration will be sent in before your puppy leaves and you'l have a copy in your email before leaving (or if done early enough, you will get a copy in the mail)

UTD on Vaccinations: Puppies are given Parvo and Distemper vaccinations before they leave our home.  If a puppy stays longer than the age of sixteen weeks, we will give them a rabies vaccination before leaving also. If your puppy is being shipped, you will need a Health Certificate from our Veterinarian. In some cases, we are able to take the puppy in cabin to deliver your puppy personally to you. This is safest, and most recommended option. Shipping is the buyers responsibility and we do not pay for any expenses pertaining so such.

Health Warranty. We offer a lifetime Guarantee against the gene affliction of PRA (night blindness) and Fanconi, a fetal kidney disease. We also offer a health warranty for all of our puppies. Within the warranty we go into depth about reimbursements and things not covered. In addition, you'll receive a copy of all of our contracts, pre signed, for your records. We keep a copy as well, and require that you sign this in person (or send via snail mail ahead of time).

Microchip Implantation and Enrollment: All puppies are microchipped and enrolled in AKC Reunite before they leave our home. We are put on as an alternative contact in case, for some reason, you cannot be contacted. We will be an alternative to ensure your puppy is safe and happy until she or he can be returned safely to you.

Health Tested Parents: All of the Basenjis residing at Amore Basenjis will be CHIC (Canine Health Information Center) certified before breeding. Our puppies are given the best chance at being healthy as their parents are fully health tested for Fanconi, PRA, Hip Dysplasia,  an CAER eye exam through OFA, and most of the time, Thyroid is done as well. In addition, We will pay $35 each for PRA and Fanconi (if done before leaving us) if you are willing to pay the other half ($35) per test. Please specify if you wish for these to be done or not.

Puppy Care Package: When available, to help you get started with your new puppy, we prepare care packages for you and your new puppy to leave with. Contents vary upon availability. We normally try to include a blanket that smells like mom, a baggie of current puppy food, toys, leash, collar, etc. (If you like choosing these on your own, please let us know so that we can save them and ensure availability to those who will use them.)

Puppy Blanket: We offer a baby receiving blanket [roughly a few feet squared] for all puppies. This blanket will be placed in with mom and siblings (around 9 weeks) until they leave us. The smell of the blanket will be scented with mom and siblings. This helps because your new home is new and different and the smell of the blanket is familiar, making the transition from our home to yours much easier!

Puppy Birth Certificate: Special to Amore Basenjis, we provide a "Puppy Birth Certificate" to every new puppy buyers. This is equipped with lots of information pertaining to your puppy, along with Registered name, parents name, info about their birth and we even ink on each puppy's actual paw print sometime within the first few weeks of life. We also include a photo of your puppy and its "legitimized" by our Amore Basenjis Stamp/Seal.

Exercise Appropriate Booklet: Each owner will receive the Puppy Culture Exercise Booklet which is an important guide to raising a puppy in a safe and healthy way. If every puppy owner would read and follow these guidelines, a huge number of behavioral issues and fractures could be avoided! Indispensable for new puppy owners,  great wisdom and guidance for breeders to pass along in their own puppy packages. We love them and know you will to!

Clicker Trained: Puppies are started on Clicker Training and are usually doing well by the time they leave. We use Clicker training to help teach your puppy and to ensure the quickest results in training.  We use positive only training. It is recommended that you continue to use the Clicker and to continue to shape your puppy to learn the behaviors you want him or her to learn.

100% Support: You will receive 24/7 support when you purchase a puppy from us. Whether its Email,  Phone, Facebook, etc, were here for you! If you are close enough, we also offer support in person.  We want everyone to know that the relationship does not end once you take your puppy home. We enjoy updates in any form, but especially photos. Please know we want you to stay in touch when you buy a puppy because our puppies mean so much to us

Crate Training:  All Puppies have started crate training. Majority will be eager and willing to enter the crate and enjoy the time they have in there. Most will not cry when placed in the crate. We do recommend placing a Raw Meaty Bone (RMB) in with the puppy to keep them busy and ensure they do not dislike their crate.

House Training: Your puppy will be well on his/her way to house training. We start young by introducing a bathroom area (puppy litter box) in the puppy pen after 3 weeks of age, to help with the process of house training. Once the puppies are old enough, we take them outside to go potty and to learn the proper place to go potty. We work hard so that the transition for your puppy is easier and the least stressful for both you and your puppy.

Obedience Training: All puppies are started on basic obedience, such as sitting and knowing how to walk on a leash. Puppies will be eager to mand (sit) automatically to ask for things and it is recommended you continue to teach your puppy how to mand. Puppies will also know how to walk on a leash before leaving (or at least be well on their way). They will have been introduced to a leash and collar and should eagerly walk when the leash and collar are put on.

Educational Help: We also like to offer loads of educational reading materials (most of which we email) and information to help you with the raising of your puppy. We offer special information and educational videos (to those who request them) for those purchasing show puppies so that they are better able to learn how to show and present their dog appropriately.

Friendship: And of course you get to have a new friendship for life (and so do we!). We are there for you when you need us and are always here to offer a helping hand.  By buying a puppy from us, you get to become apart of our extended family and are able to stay within the Amore Family forever, hopefully. ;)  We look forward to adding you to our "family" and hope you enjoy our puppies as much as we do!

We now have a Private Facebook Group for all of our "Amore" Puppy Buyers! This group is there to show my dedication to you for education, help, support, and guidance. There are numerous "file" tabs that you can click on to learn things like training, health, feeding tips, education, etc. The group is Private/Secret so that ONLY members can see/comment in the group so people dont have to worry about sharing pictures, experiences, etc!

We also have a facebook page that gives you up to date status's of whats happening at Amore! Play by Play of births, and every day info, including show results, etc. Take some time to "Like" us on facebook!

https://www.facebook.com/AmoreBasenjis   and dont forget to click the "like" button at the top!

NOTE: Please understand we care deeply about our puppies. If you do not wish to keep in contact with us or to send updated photos and just to keep in touch, please do not purchase one of our puppies. It is our goal to keep in touch with buyers and to provide an amazing friendship. In addition to learning what is going well and not so well in our past and present puppies so that we can improve our future litters and to help improve the breed by breeding better dogs.

Our Show Puppies Get a Few Extras When Going To Show Homes:

~ Individually Fanconi Health Tested

~ Individually PRA health tested

~ A "Basenji Stacked and Moving" Book
                 (while supplies last)

~ An AKC 3 Geeneration Pedigree of puppy

~Videos to show you how to get your pup "ring ready"

~Video help to show you how to show!

~We will even help showing if needed
(if you are within a range to meet us)

In addition to the above, we also start our show puppies on training for the ring! They will be started on the "Killer Free Stacks" videos, both parts, and will be well on their way for learning how to free stack and listen to you.

We also start all show puppies on "Attention, the Mother of all Behavior" which is beyond helpful because it teaches your puppy to look at you. The more distractions they encounter, the harder they pay attention to you. This teaches them that the distractions are basically just cues to look and pay attention to you more!

WE STRONGLY ENCOURAGE ALL SHOW PUPPY OWNERS TO PURCHASE  "Killer Free Stacks" and "Attention the Mother of all Behaviors" dvd sets, because these will be VITAL in your training process, and to have the best behaved show puppy/adult you can!! Its strongly recommended and we follow these protocols for our own keeper puppies! :)

What Makes an Amore Basenji So Special??

When you are looking for a puppy, your first thought is, I want a dog that I can enjoy.  Most people want a dog that can be easily trained and one that will be devoted and loyal and who will have a special bond with them. Most people want a dog that will live a long and healthy, happy life, because lets face it, we all love our pets dearly, and we want to spend as much time with them as possible.  It is for these reasons, and many more, that we do so many things to ensure the likeliness of this happening for you and your new puppy.

Puppy Culture
To start, all of our puppies are raised with the "Puppy Culture" Program by using the DVD set (created by Jane Killion of Madcap Bull Terriers) so that your puppy can be raised with the most skills and potential he or she can have to lead the best life possible. Puppies raised on Puppy Culture have been proven to have greater resistance to both stress and disease, have  Improved cardio vascular performance (stronger heart rate) and stronger heart beats along with a stronger adrenal system. Because we provide Exercise, Enrichment, and Stimulation (which are more than just entertainment!)

Scientific Studies have shown that  animals who are raised in a stimulus rich environment (such as Puppy Culture Protocol) have larger brains, with more neuro-connections than animals raised in a stimulus poor  environment.   The stimulation actually causes animals to grow up to 5% more brain (and within that 5% more brain, are anywhere from 25 - 200 neuro-connections!)

Studies have shown that the area of the brain where thse new brain cells form is actually the area related to LEARNING, MEMORY, and EMOTIONAL RESPONSE! This is consistent with the findings of scientists that animals raised in enriching environments demonstrate increased learning ability, with better retention, and appear more stable, less fearful, and better able to cope with and recover from frightening or stressful experiences.

SO, By going above and beyond withour puppies (and especially between the puppy's 3rd through 16 days of life, by providing early neurological stimulation, we can shape our puppy's futures to be the best that they can be so that they can be the dog that everyone wants

In addition, by following the Puppy Culture protocol through the first 12 weeks of age (and even better, for the rest of the puppy's life) you can and will, greatly limit the potential for behavioral problems to arise! Our puppies leave us here at Amore at 10 weeks of age. Our puppies stay here until this age, because there are 2 sets of fear periods that all puppies will go through. The start of a fear period is at 5 weeks old and against much stronger around 8 weeks old. This major fear period can greatly affect your puppy and the rest of its life, should a bad experience happen during this time. By keeping our puppies until the age that the fear imprint stage levels off, which is right around 10 weeks, we can help ensure that our puppies will not experience any negatively affecting traumatic experiences before the level off period.
Furthermore, we give the first vaccination at 9 week of age. Because the puppies fear imprint stage is at 8 weeks old and because its unclear whether the mother's antibodies are working to mask a vaccination given earlier than 8 weeks, we wait to give the puppies their vaccinations until this time. Once the puppies receive the first vaccination, we allow a week for the vaccine to become effective (the recommended time), to ensure the healthiest start for your puppy.
Puppy Culture DVD
Puppies leaving to their new homes at this age is less stressful, better for their mental health, and is safer with a vaccination on board. We then start to socialize puppies around this age. Any puppies staying longer than 10 weeks will be included in the socialization that we do with our "keeper" puppies. The first 12 weeks of a puppy's life is the MOST IMPORTANT time in shaping the way that puppy will live and cope with its life. It is HIGHLY recommended that you get out with your new puppy (if taking your puppy home at 10 weeks) and allow him or her to experience as many different things as they can. You have 2 weeks left within this critical time to help create the puppy you will love for the next upwards of 15 years. This means getting your dog out and meeting new people (of all races, heights, genders, ages, with different objects such as hats, high heels, boots, coats, crutches, canes, etc), meeting new dogs (of all shapes and sizes, long hair, short hair, floppy and prick ears, puppies, adults, disabled, etc) and as many experiences as you can, especially if your puppy is going to be partaking in them when he or she is an adult (such as camping, boating, car rides, etc)  Be cautious but get out there! :)  By continuing this program for the rest of your puppy's life, you will create a puppy that will be happy, carefree, and a joy to live with and allow the puppy the life he or she was destined to live. Both you and your puppy will enjoy your many journeys through life together , with very few, if any, behavioral problems.

Health Testing
We feel strongly in producing puppies that will be around for many years to come. Having, personally lived with a Basenji (our first Basenji, Missy, whom I got from a family friend -who undoubtedly purchased from a puppy mill.) I know first hand how hard it is to watch the struggles of health issues, that otherwise could have been prevented. Missy is and was my heart dog. She was the first Basenji I ever owned and the first real "dog" I had. She was all mine. It was my responsibility to take care of her, every day, and make sure she was happy. I did that to the best of my ability.  But, because Missy's parents were not health tested before she was born, and because she herself was not health tested, she unfortunately was not given the choice to lead a normal life. Prior to Missy's passing, She suffered from PRA, liver disease, Kidney Disease (assumed to be Fanconi,) and of course the ailments of being old. however, most of these diseases could have been prevented had the breeder just spent a little extra money and chosen the breedings of their dogs better. Learning from "their" mistake, I will never choose to do that to my dogs. All of my dogs are CHIC certified here at Amore. Though we generally try to breed to other CHIC certified dogs, we may, on occasion, work with breeders who dont CHIC certify but still health test.

Missy is the reason I got into Basenjis. She was always there for me with her quirkiness, loyal, and funny personality. Not only that, the way she looked, just caught my eye. and everything about her, i just loved. ...long story short, Missy made my whole journey this far possible. As an honor to her and a dedication to her, I promised I would raise Basenjis right. So with that, I lead into my next section, Health Testing.

Health testing is of huge importance to me, as you can tell. When I finally got into showing and breeding, I started off with 2 red bitches (Sophie and Mia) and I ensured they each were health tested before I bred (unless I knew a mating would not result in anything being affected --such as a clear PRA would of course never produce affected, even if bred to affected, which would result in a carrier, and carriers never come down with the disease themselves) Anyways, lol, So, I health tested each bitch for Fanconi, Eye problems ("CERF's" now called "CAERs"), Thyroid (although new to breeding, i didnt realize I had to send this to OFA, but i have the copies showing normal thyroid on both Bitches), Hip Dysplasia (they were both actually prelimmed but both of their prelims were "Good" results, and then of course PRA. I produced 2 litters in 2012 and I kept 2 puppies. a male tri Franky and a female brindle Lola, Both of which are now CHIC certified and 100% health tested. I made a promise to myself that all of the dogs that have "Amore" in their names and who are kept by us to be shown and used as breeding dogs, whether long term or short term, will be 100% health tested and will receive CHIC certification by the time they reach 2 or 3 years of age. I also have a very nice up and coming young hopeful, named Flower, who was from Sophie's 2nd and last litter (Jan 2014)
